Firmihin Forest

Firmihin Forest is located in the central highlands of Socotra. It is the island's most iconic landscape, home to the largest and densest concentration of Dragon’s Blood Trees (Dracaena cinnabari) in the entire world. Walking through Firmihin is often described as stepping onto another planet. Unlike a typical dense woodland, this forest sits on a rugged limestone plateau, with thousands of ancient trees spaced out across the arid terrain.

If you are looking at Firmihin from an aesthetic or compositional standpoint, it is incredibly striking. The environment offers a masterclass in geometric shapes and bold color contrasts, The Dragon's Blood Tree has a highly distinctive, almost engineered appearance. The trunk is stout and gnarled, splitting into dichotomous branches that repeatedly divide into two. These branches support a dense, perfectly domed, umbrella-like canopy.

Because the trees compete for scarce water and mist in an arid environment, they naturally grow evenly spaced apart. From a high vantage point, the forest looks like a deliberate, repeating pattern or grid draped over the undulating hills. The tree gets its name from the thick, vivid crimson resin it bleeds when the bark is cut. This striking carmine red has been prized for millennia as a dye, varnish, and medicine. While the Dragon's Blood Tree dominates Firmihin forest, the undergrowth and surrounding plateau feature other bizarre endemic plants that add to the surreal landscape. You will frequently see the Bottle Trees (Desert Roses) with their swollen, water-storing trunks and delicate pink flowers, as well as Frankincense and Cucumber trees. Firmihin is a deeply fragile ecosystem. The forest is currently facing severe threats and is considered endangered.
