Homhil Protected Area

Homhil Protected Area is a lush plateau on the northeast of Socotra. While other areas of the island are dominated by the iconic Dragon’s Blood Trees, Homhil is unique because it feels like a "botanical garden in the clouds", featuring the island’s highest concentration of Frankincense trees alongside a famous natural infinity pool, the natural rock basin perched at the very edge of the plateau. As you swim, the water appears to merge with the Arabian sea hundreds of meters below. It offers a panoramic vista of the coastline and the blue horizon. Reaching the pool usually involves a 30 minute hike from the main plateau entrance. The trail takes you through a landscape of bizarre trees before opening up to the cliffside view. Freshwater pools is fed by natural springs, providing a cool, refreshing break from the arid heat of the plateau.

Homhil is a sanctuary for some of Socotra's most prized endemic flora. It is one of the best places to see multiple species in one concentrated area, home to the world famous Frankincense Trees (Boswellia), you can see several different species here, their trunks oozing the aromatic resin that was once more valuable than gold in the ancient world.
