Zahek Sand Dunes

The Zahek Sand Dunes are located on the southern coast of Socotra in the Nogid region. While the Arher dunes are famous for being pressed against massive cliffs, Zahek is distinct because it feels like a vast, endless desert, often compared to a "mini Sahara" that rolls directly into the Indian Ocean.

The landscape at Zahek is defined by its scale and "sugary" texture, Unlike other parts of the island where mountains dominate the view, the dunes at Zahek stretch toward the horizon in soft, undulating waves. The white mounds eventually meet the deep turquoise water of the southern coast. These dunes are "active" and "shifting," meaning their shapes and positions change daily due to the strong coastal winds. This is one of the best places to see Socotri camels (extra fee) grazing on the low scrub bushes near the edges of the dunes. It’s also a prime spot for birdwatchers to see species like the Desert Wheatear or the endemic Socotra Cisticola.
